Dari rekor 51 kali bertanding dengan 38 kemenangan ini pertandingan yang paling dikenal adalah trilogi pertandingannya melawan Arturo Gatti. Tentu saja Micky Ward tak berjuang sendiri. Ia tak mungkin melakukannya tanpa bantuan Dick Eklund (Christian Bale) yang menjadi pelatihnya.

Dick Eklund sebenarnya adalah saudara tiri Micky yang sempat meniti karier sebagai petinju juga. Karier Dick sempat bagus meski akhirnya ia dikalahkan oleh obat-obatan terlarang. Berusaha menebus kesalahannya, Dick kemudian menjadi pelatih Micky dan mengantar petinju muda ini menuju gelar juara dunia yang ia rebut saat bertanding di London.
